Chapter Nine
Margaret spent one of the longest nights of her life lying in bed, staring toward the window as the stars gleamed above and then faded at the approach of dawn. She’d tried to sleep, but she simply couldn’t. Wade was leaving, taking with him all the fleeting dreams she’d had about a life with him. They’d been silly anyway—many cowboys were single because of the nature of their work. She should have realized it and understood that this attraction was just a passing fancy.
When it was time to get up, she pushed back her covers and stood, dressing quickly. The sooner she could throw herself into work, the faster she could distract herself from her feelings of disappointment. If Wade felt this strongly about going to Texas, as his friend, she should support him. That’s what good friends did.
Because she’d never gone to sleep, she made it to the kitchen before anyone else and started a pot of coffee. Then she looked around to see what else needed to be done. It looked like they were running low on corn bread, so she pulled out Sarah’s recipes and mixed up a batch before taking her coffee cup into the dining room and sitting at one of the tables.
“Good morning.”
She knew without turning her head that it was Wade who had just entered. She’d know his voice anywhere—it did something to her insides when she heard it. “Good morning. Have some coffee.”
He stepped into the kitchen and came back a moment later with a cup. “You’re up early.”
“I couldn’t sleep, actually. I think I was excited for your trip.”
“I couldn’t either, but I’m not sure if it was excitement or nerves.” He looked at her across the table. “You know, I’ve moved around a lot. I’ve worked on ranches all over the state, and going to a new place has never been hard for me. Until now.”
“I’m sure you’ll get along quite well,” Margaret told him. “You seem to have a knack for making new friends.”
“I’m not concerned about where I’m going. I’m concerned about who I’m leaving behind.”
Margaret dropped her eyes to the table so he wouldn’t see the tears brimming in them. She was being silly.
Wade reached across the table and took her hand. “Will you write me?”
“Of course,” she said lightly. “I can’t promise that I’ll have anything interesting to write about, though—I’m sure you don’t want to know how many beds I’ve made or how much pie we served, and those types of things are the sum total of my life these days.”
“I’ll want to hear about everything you’re doing. Don’t leave anything out—especially not how much pie you’ve served. That’s important information.”
“It is?”
“Oh, believe me, it is. I actually think that’s the main reason why I didn’t sleep last night. I was awake wondering about pie.”
She looked up to meet the twinkle in his eye. “That must have made for a very rough night indeed.”
“It did. In fact, the only night I’ve ever spent that was worse was wondering about cake.
